The Brücke Museum was opened to the public in 1967. The museum owns around 400 paintings, sculptures and several thousand drawings, watercolours and prints by members of the »Brücke«, the expressionistic movement founded in 1905 in Dresden by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fritz Bleyl, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Erich Heckel.
The »Brücke« is the oldest of the German groups of artists to have a decisive international impact on the development of 20th century art. Changing exhibitions investigate lives and work of the »Brücke« members from different points of view. Exhibitions about other expressionistic artists of the early 20th century widen the view on the historic and artistic environment of the artists’ association.
